Neil Young - Living With War
February 3, 2007 |
Neil sometimes breaks new ground. He usually leaves you wanting more. He almost always reminds you why you love him. I love Neil Young but I after a few listens to Living with War I am unimpressed by this particular album. It’s drab at best and completely predictable. The lyrics are obvious almost to the point of sarcasm. He doesn’t stray very far from his typical style either with most of his songs sung with the same voice and most the tunes sounding very similar. There are a couple of songs that make their point rather obviously such as “Let’s Impeach The President” and “Looking for a Leader“. Nothing on this album is nearly as poetic as his classic “Ohio“. I read an interview where Neil talked about the fact that he was waiting for a younger voice to write these songs. That he wanted to let a new generation of Songwriters make their stand but that he couldn’t wait any longer. I don’t think Neil heard Green Day’s opus “American Idiot” or he wouldn’t have said such things. While Neil is a good man for taking his powerful voice to the masses I wish he could have spent a little more time in the crafting of these tunes. His voice is an eternal light and what he has said is important. While I couldn’t agree anymore with his sentiment for the current administration and social welfare I just am not hooked or intrigued with these particular tunes. It’s a lackluster album at best.
