The Shins - Wincing the Night Away
February 5, 2007 |
I have been listening to the latest release Wincing The Night Away from the much hyped, much hailed The Shins the last couple of days. While I really like the band I was never really sure why they received such praise. It was as if they were the second coming of Indie. Hailed by the mainstream press as the “coolest band in the world”. I guess its the Hollywood connection that did it.
The two tracks that emerge on Wincing The Night Away - “Phantom Limb” and “Nothing At All” are tight, melodic and fun. They are easy on the ears and colorful in their presentation but I don’t hear instant classic. The do on the other hand give me just enough of a maturity, just enough of a taste of the hype to make me think this could be a damn good album but like so many hyped albums from Hyped bands Wincing The Night Away leaves a lot more to be desired. The album never quite takes off, there are no super star songs here that keep you hooked. There are no more “wow” moments like their fan favorite Chutes Too Narrow album. A miss hit in my book Wincing The Night Away will “not change your life”.
