Rilo Kiley has reworked their fashion -err I mean sound and are just about ready to release their long awaited major label debut Under The Black Light. I got a hold of a copy a week or so ago and have given it a few spins (is it spinning if its MP3?) . Out of the gate the opening track Silver Lining is a comforting song very much in line with their past work. Jenny Lewis’s twangy and soft tone lift the songs above their mark and the laid back and timely work of the band is in full force. After the second song its goes downhill. Its as if the album is a mix of 11 singles from different era’s (maybe they should have tried that as a concept). The tracks have almost continuity except for the lack of continuity. Now know fair well that this could be their goal - hipsters are so contrarian - I can appreciate a few of the tracks. And there are a few that have grown on me like Breakin Up with its disco like beat and Blondie like qualities but the album is confused. It isnt really thought out and while in these days of single tracks being more important than a full album I think this one has been way over produced.

I read a comparison to Fleetwood Mac - While I get that comparison I do not concur. Rilo Kiley’s strength is their ability to take seemingly insipid styles and meld them into the uber cool. While I am willing to give this album a fair shake I am having a hard time understanding what and why it is 12 songs together under one title. The track Dreamworld could have been penned by any number of 80’s bands - or with the goal of being picked up by a VW ad exec - the song is pure crap. A 4/4 high school dance track.

Some times an album like this will grow on you. I am hoping that this is the case but after Jenny’s stellar album with The Watson Twins released last year there is a tremendous level of expectation. While I understand that this is not Jenny Lewis with the Rilo Kiley band I wish they had pulled a bit more from the roots and less from the tips. Playing homage to the producers and the A&R execs by creating a polished radion friendly album is one way to gain new fans but its at the expense of alienating some older one. The track 15 seems very appropriate for it seems not only to be an ironic tale of “ooops, you are how old? ” but turns out that this is the exact age of the people who will love this album. Maybe that is the goal all along…

Last night I was fortunate enough to find myself in front of Stephen Stills and his band at the Marjory Luke Theater in Santa Barbara. Stephen is rock royalty. His carreer is so filled with “whose and wheres” that he is among a few folks who are int he Rock and Rock Hall of Fame twice. As the case with many aging rockers I was expecting to be underwhelmed by Stills but boy was I surprised. Stephen still has it.

The show started out with a rather rough version of Helplessly Hoping as Stephen’s voice warmed up and his band added the fill. But this rough start was instantly removed as the band left and Still’s was left with only his Martin d-45. Stephen was always the talent in the groups. Not that Graham Nash or David Crosby were hacks but Stills was and as evidenced last night an amazing guitar player and a wonderful, melodic songwriter. His guitar playing is what put the audience onto their feet.

Rolling through his catalog of hits Still’s was captivating and clever. He is a funny man and is quite light hearted. The acoustic songs got better and better as his voice warmed up. Clearly still very capable of hitting those high notes and those trademarked shouts many of the songs sounded as good as they did 30 years ago when they were embedded in the consciousness of a generation. The show took off when during the last part of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes the band joined him back onstage to “fill” in the doo doo doo’s.

The rest of the show was a showcase of why Jimi Hendrix and others admired his playing. Being a guitar player myself I was thoroughly blow away by Still’s skills. He simply rips. Ending the night with a stellar Somethings Happening Here Still’s and crew blew away the audience and left this fan in smiles. Great show Stephen - welcome back!

Almost as soon as I discover CriticalMetrics.com I discover a new gem. Sea Wolf is a small side project band coming out of LA. The silky and inviting style of Alex Church pulls you into the songs as fast and comforting as a warm bed after a long night. In fact that is a phrase that I would use to describe this music = bed. The songs are not overly complex, they are not striving for attention but instead are simple delightful tunes that welcome you to either pay attention or just bounce your head in enjoyment. This is my favorite type of music - easy. While I do appreciate the complexities of a masterfully written poetic song sometimes I prefer my music to be innocuous and kind.

Here is one of the tracks available for download on Sea Wolf‘s site. I really like this song The Garden You Planted - what about you?

Friday night marked the season opener for the Santa Barbara Bowl. Opening the summer was M. Ward who was opening for Norah Jones and her “handsome band“. I was first turned onto M. (Matt) Ward sometime early last year. His Post War album came highly recommended via Bob Boilen’s All Songs Considered on NPR. Bob and I have very similar tastes in tunes so it was with high regard that I picked up Post War after hearing Bob proclaim it one of the best in years. It didn’t leave my CD player for 2 months. And I did indeed include it on my Best of list.

M. Ward hails from Portland Oregon, Home to rain, beer and Elliot Smith. His songwriting proneness is stunning. His soft warm and inviting vocals welcome the listener with open arms and beckons the ears to pay attention. I was very much looking forward to M. Ward taking the stage as the sun set over the Pacific and the warm Summer afternoon moved to a cool Summer night. It was a little disapointing to see him standing solo with just a guitar though. His songs are deep and take a bit more than a strumming dreadnought to come across. He opened the show with Norah at his side which helped to woo the few people that had come to see the opener. After a nice duet with Norah he was joined by a second guitar player who added wonderful strums and harmonies and a dead on whistle. As quietly as this accompaniment entered the stage he left for a few songs. The interesting highlight of the set was the accompaniment by a very odd sounding and looking woman - Victoria Williams, perhaps the most colorful singers I have ever heard. Sounding a bit like a cartoon character or the Ruth Gordon (the actress from that played Maude in Harold and Maude) I wasnt sure if she was a savant or a homeless woman Matt had adopted but I loved her.

So the set was a little slow. He worked through a few of his “better known” songs from Post War and through in a couple of others which I wasn’t so familiar with and won over a few new fans. The subdued audience was a perfect match for the subdued solo M. Ward as he ushered in a new season at my favorite venue in all the world. I would rather see him with a full band though, in a small club with a few hours to play than as a token opener. If you read this M. come on back with your band next time!

It took a few weeks but I have finally digested enough of Wilco’s Sky Blue Sky to fully understand and appreciate the album. I first have to say that this has grown into one of my favorite albums, ever. The delicate songwriting and voicing of Jeff Tweedy with the newly acquired guitar playing mastery of their newest member Nels Cline, have combined to produce a sound reminiscent of greater times and legendary bands. The tracks rotate from simple and subtle to sensational. It is one of those albums that shuffles through your head. Your favorite song will rotate. Mine started with You Are My Face. About halfway into You Are My Face the song changes time and tempo, it explodes into a upbeat but still back beat session. The kind of tune that picks you up from your seat and makes your hop yet when you actually pick apart the song you realize that there is not much there. Like the mastery of The Beatles who were able to create a mountain of sound with only a few instruments You Are My Face suceeds in appearing much bigger than it is.

Speaking of The Beatles; Somewhere somehow in the last year Jeff Tweedy became the ghost of John Lennon. Listening to Walken the tune screams of John Lennon. I can almost see Jeff Tweedy in a white suit dancing about some daisy filled field while singing “The more I think about it the more I know its true” . Its a high praise for a songwriter but I think Tweedy has pulled of a hat trick of sorts. Not only has he and Wilco created a masterpiece they have done it without the ussual fanfare and hyperbole that precedes or follows a band of this caliber. Whether it is the continued lack of real recognition among the masses for their incredible songs or just the fact that Wilco does not appeal to a large popular audience I have been amazed at the lack of praise for this album. Rolling Stone gave in a 4/5 stars. It must be a case of mistaken identity how else could a band producing one of the best Rock albums of the new century be granted the silent and soulless praise of a 4 star review? Well then again it is from the same set of critics that gave The Kings of Leon’s new bore the same 4 star.

Regardless of what others have said about this album it ranks up there for me. I give it a 5 star (out of 5 stars!) review. It has obtained a classic status and sits proudly next to Neil’s Harvest, Petty’s Wildfire, The Beatles Rubber Soul or Revolver, The Beach Boys Pet Sounds, and a few dozen other albums that are on my desert island list. Does it make yours?

One of my Favorite albums of 2005 was Shout Out Louds Howl Howl Gaff Gaff. A true sleeper album that never quite broke through. The Scottish band is filled with such youthful vigor and explosive enthusiasm that the songs jump out of the speakers. They apparently are finished with their follow up album but for what ever reason it is not available in the US yet. But today a few of the songs were released in a EP called Tonight I Have To Leave It. They seem to continue along their path of excited and virtuous rock. A great thing in my opinion. If you haven’t checked out Howl Howl Gaff Gaff and are a fan of hyper energetic post punk Neo-British pop rock than do yourself a favor and give them a listen. Besides being the longest most bizarre genre they are really great.

The last time I saw Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) play was at The Santa Barbara Bowl. He whether due to his sudden Indie fame or his youth was rather subdued for that performance. It seems though Conor has learned a few things about showmanship. The band was flanked by a six piece mini orchestra a pianist, two drummers and a percussionist in addition to the obligatory Bass, and Lead guitar. All dressed in white against a 60’s style projection the imagery alone was a treat. But the real treat was the BIGness that the band produced. Finding their way through his collection of songs they took Bright Eyes on a sonic journey elevating the simplistic tunes to a new level….more to come

Wilco’s Sky Blue Sky is a stunning masterpiece. I have been trying to absorb the immenseness of it and just now it is just starting to settle. An album of this caliber is only produced once in a career. Well into my 20th listen I am only now beginning to understand the intensity, the depth and the maturity that is Sky Blue Sky. This could very well be the best album I have heard in years…

Neil Young’s recent release of Live at Massey Hall his stellar performance in Toronto some 35 years ago is utterly fantastic. There are two people in the music world. Those who love Neil and those who don’t. While I wont get into the finer details of why you SHOULD love Neil I will say that if you listen to this album and don’t walk away with a new appreciation of the artist than nothing will change your mind. This definitive collection of Neil solo on stage with nothing more than his Guitar and Harmonica is pure butter for this fan’s ears. The subtleties of his young voice, the power of his poetics, the shear boldness of a young man, all shine through in sonic pleasure. This album / performance puts Neil at his peak in a wonderfully remastered edition. To hear him play Harvest right before it’s release is jaw dropping. Here is a track for your pleasure. If you are a fan than you NEED this album.
